Concerns on Silicosis in the United States

Description

Regulators in the United States are focusing on crystalline-silica exposure as the cause of silicosis cases with stoneworkers in fabrication shops. Workplace-safety agencies at different levels of government are increasing inspections. New rules and guidelines are in effect for air quality In the country’s largest state of California. An affected worker with silicosis recently won USD$52 million in damages from a jury, with similar cases now in U.S. courts. Many industry observers see all of this as the most-consequential development in decades.

We will review the history of the current situation, including the stone industry’s involvement in dealing with new regulations. We will also present the views of two U.S. fabrication-shop owners offering first-hand knowledge of maintaining workplace safety in the new environment.
