From Drawing to 3D Modeling: the Stereotomy of the Skew Arch Bridges

Description

Over the centuries, stereotomy and design have developed hand in hand. In fact, the realization of a three-dimensional stone element occurred only after providing the stonecutter with a rigorous orthogonal projection, accompanied by complex face reversals. Even today, stereotomy and design share their destinies thanks to the impetus of new technologies. Virtual modeling and 3D prototyping have completely replaced the work of the stonecutter, but the creative role of the architect and engineer remains unchanged. Through oblique arches, this lesson aims to demonstrate that the role of the designer is still central in the art of cutting stones.
