Lithic experiments: Full / Empty
Description
“Sculpture is an art that, by removing the superfluous from the material, reduces it to the form of the body designed by the craftsman.” - Giorgio Vasari The close relationship between material and excess, expressed in Vasari's quote, defines the inseparable link between fullness and emptiness, a fundamental concept of antithetical nature present in sculpture, architecture, and design. The experimental exhibition on lithic material explores the relationship between fullness and emptiness in the age of new digital processing tools. The transition from the past manual action to the CNC machining, such as abrasive milling or cutting with diamond tools and waterjets, offers new opportunities in terms of precision, technical reproducibility, and use of waste. In light of these new possibilities, the participating artists freely explore the relationship between fullness and emptiness through the production of a unique series of marble works.
